Normal Conflict vs. Bullying Children will occasionally experience disagreements with their peers. Incidents of HIB are identified when certain characteristics and motivating factors come into play. Milltown school district offers supervised conflict resolution meetings and peer mediation sessions to assist students with resolving normal conflict. However if an incident is identified as a HIB occurence, disciplinary action will be taken by the administration and/or Board of Education.

PBS is a school-wide system that emphasizes rewarding good choices.
Lessons related to the six pillars of character and aligned with the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards. Embedded in the health, life skills, and K-5 music curriculum.
Rachel’s Challenge Pledge
All parents and students embrace our Joyce Kilmer Pledge commiting to be
an upstander in support of Rachel's Challenge.
A program and a process during which trained student mediators assist other students in working toward a win-win solution in a disagreement or other conflict. Student are recommended by their teachers to become trained peer mediators.
A teacher led session during which students are guided toward resolution of a situation involving a disagreement or other conflict.
A partnership between academically capable upper classmen and students in need of additional academic support fostering a positive academic and social relationship.
Middle School Advisors
Sessions are facilitated by a middle school teacher and are designed to promote a sense of “family” and encourage cross-grade peer relationships. Advisory groups meet every Monday during the middle school elective period and address monthly topics related to character education and bullying prevention. Students are able to request a teacher- advisor and remain with that same advisor throughout grades 6-8.
Periodic student assembly programs are scheduled throughout the year to reinforce and reward positive collective behavior by the schools according to our PBS program and to reinforce the philosophy of Rachel's Challenge.
Reactive Consequences to Identified Bullying Cases
Prescribed consequences may include one or a combination of interventions listed below.
Student may be assigned disciplinary consequences according to the full range of options for code of conduct violations outlined in the Parent and Pupil Handbook at the discretion of the superintendent. Athletes may be subject to restriction of play-time or removal from the team roster.
Peer Pep Talk
A dialogue of acceptable parameters for social interaction overseen by a teacher advisor among trained student upstanders and a student exhibiting a pattern of negative peer relations, which may include a bullying incident. Students are recommended by their teachers to become Peer Pep Talk leaders.
HIB Remediation Workshop A two-day workshop after school to focus on acquiring more positive social skills and strategies. The workshop is scheduled quarterly at each school and is facilitated by a trained staff member.
Middlesex Out-Reach and Education (M.O.R.E) The Middlesex Out-Reach and Education (“M.O.R.E.”) unit of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office offer information and online pamphlets on bullying prevention and various other safety topics.
